Defensive Midfielder Tips:
Question/Comment:
Hello,
I play at an elite level of soccer in the United States and my coach has me playing as a defensive midfielder. I have played this position once before and says that I have all the qualities of a defensive midfielder.
The work rate, the physical build, the speed, the ability to get stuck in, leadership, etc. I understand all of that, but what i don't understand is the tactical idea of this position.
Do i look to play the ball long every time, or do i keep it simple? When do i go forward? Small things such as this are what i need the understanding of.
Answer:
Florin, it's important that every aspiring pro and elite player like yourself analyzes their position and remains a true student of the game like you are doing.
So you need some advice on the tactical side of the defensive midfielder position, no problem. First before I go any further a Defensive Midfielder has 3 jobs.
1) Protect the center backs
2) Deny service into the posting striker
3) Break up and distrupt the attack of the oppponents
If you think about those three things while you play you'll set yourself up for success.
In terms of when the ball is on your foot it depends on a few things. Your job is the defensive presence, the other center mids have different jobs, perhaps one is your playmaker.
If you do have a creative player on the pitch then getting them the ball as often as possible is your job. Meaning do your job, then play simple so they can do theirs.
Sure there will be times as the defensive center midfielder where you'll look to play long or may not have much time on the ball. Just keep it simple and play within the dimensions of the position.
A perfect resource to see how your position fits into the grand scheme of things is at Defensive Center Midfielder Page here you'll find more info then you'll ever need on the position.
